Protect our Waterways Activity
Use this activity to show your children how humans can damage waterways and what we can do to help.
This activity involves a large glass bowl or container filled with water. The premise is to have your children watch you tell a story about your local water way. Start with telling children about your local creek, bay area, lake or river. Then, ask children to guess what type of animals live there. Start adding in rubbish, dirt, chemicals (such as dishwashing liquid) or others inside the water bowl and ask children what they think is happening to the water.
Children should be able to distinguish that when we pollute our waterways, the water becomes unsuitable for the animals that live there. Make sure that you end this activity on a positive note – discuss how your community can ensure waterways are kept clean and healthy!
