Water Warriors

Help Conserve Water

This challenge is in celebration of World Water Day on March 22nd. This day is all about celebrating water and raises awareness of the 2 billion people currently living without access to safe water.

For more information visit: www.worldwaterday.org/learn

EcoMarines Water Wizards challenge is a great activity to conduct on this day to help your Mini Marines learn about and appreciate the water sources we are so lucky to have here in Australia and understand how water sanitation works.

This challenge is sponsored by our partners at Urban Utilities and is for Early Learning Centres in Brisbane City, Ipswich and Scenic Rim Councils. Centres outside of this region can participate and will receive a different prize if chosen as the winners!

The Urban Utilities Water Wizards Performance challenge is a wonderful opportunity to educate younger children about saving this precious resource in an entertaining way that may be more digestible for their age group.

CHALLENGE: 3 P's Challenge

Projector screen to show video  /  Printed our game cards  /  Video camera

30 minutes for Step 1 and Step 2
Up to 1 hour class session for Step 3

Step 1

Show your children the above Urban Utilities video which gives tips to save water at home featuring Walter the Water-wasting puppet!

Play the Urban Utilities Water Warriors song provided below – a source of inspiration for their performance. The performance your Mini Marines create can be a dance to the Water Warriors song OR they could choose to make up their own chant/song that focuses on the importance of conserving water e.g., 3 P’s.

Step 2

Play the ‘To Flush or Not To Flush” game with your class! This game is flexible but basically involves the teacher holding up household items or items that frequently get flushed down the toilet. Children can then guess if they can or cannot flush the items and why.

You can use items around your classroom or bring in some items from home!

Or you can download these game cards and hold those up instead. The children can have the option to place the cards into the toilet or the rubbish bin.

It is important to get children to understand why the 3 p’s can only be flushed down the toilet.

Step 3

Together with your centre, create a short song/chant (1 – 2 verses and a chorus) about water conservation or a dance performance to the ‘Water’ song (1 – 2 minutes).

Step 4

Submit your song or music video to EcoMarines! Winners will receive a special presentation/incursion from Urban Utilities and EcoMarines.

In the meantime you can supply your Mini Marines with the following Urban Utilities colouring sheet featuring Dusty Drought and Enviro! Or if you would prefer a more interactive learning experience with your children you can try the ” What’s a No.3?” online game you can play with them.

You can also download the following “Save Water! Turn off Taps!” poster to hang it up in the centre’s toilets for both staff and children as a reminder.

Use the form to the right to submit!

We can't wait to see your centers' germination station photo journal!
