Empowering the Next Generation with Action Planning

Meaningful environmental stewardship beings with empowering students to lead. When young minds are given the tools, platforms, and agency to analyse their surroundings, they can create innovative and practical solutions that drive real environmental change. 

The EcoMarines team recently had the privilege of running an interactive Action Planning Workshop at St Augustine’s Parish Primary School. During the workshop, the EcoMarines Ambassadors tackled local environmental challenges at school, crafting a multi-year strategy to enhance sustainability, boost local biodiversity, reduce waste, and drive individual responsibility. 

The EcoMarines Ambassadors paired immediate goals for Year 6 leaders with near-future projects for Year 5 students. With this planning, St Augustine’s Parish Primary School’s EcoMarines Ambassadors are ensuring long-term impact for their environmental efforts. 

The 2026 Strategy: Year 6 students are focusing on waste reduction and individual responsibility within the student body. Through keen observation, the EcoMarines Ambassadors identified a widespread “out of sight, out of mind” mentality, regarding litter within the school grounds, driven largely by the quality hard work performed by school groundskeeping staff. 

To confront these challenges directly, the EcoMarines Ambassadors developed the following two initiatives: 

Groundskeeper’s Day Off: To address an “out of sight, out of mind” mentality around waste disposal, the EcoMarines Ambassadors will pause groundskeeping for a day to highlight one day’s worth of litter. Before-and-after documentation will be presented at assembly to drive individual accountability. 

Rubbish Monitors: EcoMarines Ambassadors and Support Crew will monitor impacted areas and identify students who are littering often. These students will then be tasked with cleaning these areas within the school grounds, reinforcing individual responsibility. Photos of before and after the students clean will be shared at assembly.  

The 2027 Blueprint: Looking ahead to 2027, the Year 5 students have designed broader community engagement and a push for biodiversity in school-grounds and beyond. 

Nest Boxes for Biodiversity: A cross-generational initiative by partnering with the local Men’s Shed to research, build, and install nest boxes for native bird species. This both engages the community and widens the potential biodiversity around school grounds. 

Green Tree Day Fundraiser: A targeted $500 fundraising campaign to fund native tree planting across every year level, complete with educational signage to educate students about which native species has been planted. 

Building Lasting Leadership 

The Action Planning Workshop demonstrated the remarkable vision and leadership as shown by the St Augustine’s Parish Primary School students. By combining waste management, with hands-on conservation and community partnership, these young leaders are setting a powerful standard for not only their peers, but schools across Queensland.
